REPORTER’S DIARY: With N46,000 bribe, I drove a ‘stolen’ car from Abuja to Lagos, and back!
An operative of the Nigeria Police Force identified as Gambo might be in hot soup as he was videoed obtaining bribe from an undercover journalist investigating corruption among security operatives.
Over two days in April, investigative journalist ‘Fisayo Soyombo drove the equivalent of a stolen vehicle from Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital, to Lagos, the country’s commercial hub.
Not only did he arrive Lagos safely with the car, he returned to Abuja scot-free with it — and this is despite passing through a whopping 86 checkpoints in a journey of over 1,600km that lasted a cumulative 28hours 17minutes. He recounts his experience in this article for TheCable.
Just by the exit of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway into the descent leading to Ife Road, a policeman named Gambo aggressively flagged him down during the second part of the undercover investigation.
After much haggling, they both agreed on a N20,000 fee to be paid to Gambo as bribe for the undercover journalist whose vehicle had no papers to be free. It was unknown to Gambo that their discussion was being filmed by the journalist.
Read how some scenes of the drama ensued below:
“What is the content of these bags?” he asks after making me open the car booth.
“Personal effects.”
“Can we check?”
“Yes, please.”
When he requests for my papers and I tell him I don’t have, he climbs into the car with me, signals his colleague that he is leaving the scene with me, and asks me to drive off. He doesn’t exactly tell me the destination, but rather than go right towards Ife Road, he asks me to exit the roundabout to the left, towards Idi-Ape in Ibadan.
When I politely ask to be allowed to park nearby “so we can discuss”, Gambo, as the officer would later introduce himself as, drags the car steering with me, Soyombo narrated in his lengthy report.
“I’m not a easy person like that o,” he says emphatically. “You want to argue with me? Even if we are going to discuss, don’t cause holdup. Don’t argue with me; you cannot argue with me, oga. I’m not a easy person like that o. I say go!”
I comply, telling him: “You said you want to discuss; I’m ready.”
“No, I don’t want to discuss!” Officer Gambo interjects. “But if you want to discuss, I’m hearing you. If you want to discuss, I will listen to you.”
“Tell me what you want,” I reply. “If you tell me what you want, I will do it.”
Encouraged, he asks in quick succession: “Can you? Can you?”

BENIN— THREE persons including a young man from Edo State based in Napoli, Italy have reportedly died as a result of the curse placed on human traffickers in Edo State by the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare 11.
The victim in Italy, (names withheld), was said to be a notorious human trafficker, while the two others were said to be armed robbers, who died in their sleep shortly after returning from a robbery operation.
Vanguard was reliably informed that the victim based in Italy had several girls camped in an apartment and all the girls engaged in prostitution under his supervision.
Trouble was said to have started when the girls informed him they could no longer continue to pay him the money agreed upon before they gain their freedom following the Oba’s curse.
The deceased, it was gathered, rejected their position insisting on payment.
It was said that the victim suddenly started suffering a mysterious headache forcing them to rush him to the hospital where he died last Sunday.
One of his accomplices, identified as Queen, is also said to be at the hospital in Napoli, Italy, following mysterious illness. It was gathered the deceased and Queen had doubted the efficacy of the Oba’s curse despite pleas from the girls in his camp to grant them freedom.
It was gathered that his death was received with shock by members of the Edo community in Italy. Edo State-born activist and host of reality talk show based in Germany, Prince Edwin Idahosa confirmed that the deceased “ died as a result of the curse by the Oba of Benin. I know the guy very well but unfortunately for him, after the curse he still collected money from the girls which resulted in his death. His girl friend is also on admission now for the same problem “
At Useh, in Ogida barracks Benin City, two suspected robbers were said to have died in their sleep after they reportedly returned from a robbery operation as their neighbours woke up yesterday to discover their lifeless bodies in their rooms.
Reacting to the development, a member of the Edo State Task Force Against Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration, Mr. Solomon Okoduwa, yesterday, said the committee was informed about the death of a trafficker in Italy and warned that Oba’s curses are potent.
He said: “It is important for all Edo sons and daughters to heed to the call of the Oba. Oba’s orders are orders you don’t joke with. For those who are still in the business, they should remember Oba’s curse.
“So you can see that there is no where you can hide .Either you are caught by the law or by the gods of the land.
“Oba has freed all the girls. So we are trying to locate the family of the deceased here in Benin and also free the girls in captivity by alerting the Police over there.”

The police on Wednesday declared Dino Melaye, a senator from Kogi State, wanted.
The lawmaker was declared wanted alongside Mohammed Audu, son of a former governor of the state, Abubakar Audu.
Police said the duo have also been placed on Interpol watch list for allegedly providing false information to the police in relation to an alleged attempt on Mr. Melaye’s life last year.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Kogi police commissioner, Ali Janga, and distributed by the Force Headquarters Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Melaye had earlier written to the Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris stating his intention to submit himself to the police for investigation.
But the senator attached a condition that the case must only be handled in Abuja and not in Lokoja or anywhere in Kogi State, saying Governor Yahaya Bello has control of law enforcement agencies in the state.
The senator also wrote to the U.S. Embassy, the British High Commission and other foreign missions over the weekend, alleging attempt by the police to hurt him.
While he was being declared wanted shortly before noon Wednesday, Mr. Melaye was on the floor of the Senate during which he lambasted the police again and alleged conspiracy against him.
The police declared him wanted as they were announcing the disappearance of some suspects who allegedly indicted Mr. Melaye last week from custody. The police said they escaped Wednesday morning and declared them wanted while also announcing pending investigation of all officers on duty at the time of the escape.
Mr. Melaye said the police are plotting a cover-up by either killing the suspects or orchestrating their escape.
“I will sue the IGP for intimidation, abuse of power, harassment and mental assault if these 2 suspects are not produced dead or alive,” Mr. Melaye said on the floor of the Senate according to a transcript of Wednesday’s proceeding provided on the Senate’s Twitter handle.

Sergei Mavrodi the founder of MMM is dead.
According to a report carried by the Russian media, the Russian businessman was rushed to the hospital on the 25th of March after several complaints of chest pain but is said to have died on the same day. He was 62 years.
Mavrodi was born with a heart problem and was good at Mathematics and Physics. Since his first arrest in 1984 over economic illegal activities, he has been in and out of court cases.
MMM became fully operational in Nigeria in 2016. It was embraced by Nigerians and seen as a quick money-making venture. Nigerians ignored warnings by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), investors, previous records and religious bodies to Nigerians to desist from investing in the Ponzi scheme.
When the system crashed for unknown reasons in 2016, a total of N18billion was thrown into the sea resulting in the death of many. Despite plans to revive the business in 2017, it yielded little success.
Guardian contacted the MMM office in Nigeria and a “Danny- Consultant” described the news as false. “That is a false statement…Please stop the panic attack. It doesn’t help. All mavros are safe and ok”, he said
Nigerians have taken to their social platforms to express their feelings:
After duping millions of people, MMM founder has died of a heart attack in a Russian hospital. Oh well, the stresses of the people who have been duped have caught up to him and finished him. Sergei Mavrodi
