Lagos bridges under threat of collapse from parked trucks

Some bridges in Lagos are at a risk of buckling under the weight of parked heavy-duty trucks.
The Ijora, Eko and Carter Bridges are under great strains from immobile articulated vehicles, a situation worsened by recurring gridlocks and the deplorable state of roads leading to ports and tank farms.
Other bridges affected by similar stress are those at Abati Barracks, Ojuelegba and Stadium.
The Guardian recently counted 85 articulated vehicles conveying containers of various sizes parked between the Ijora and Jibowu Bridges.
An empty 20-feet container weighs 2,000 kilogrammes. A 40-feet container doubles the kilogrammes. With an average truck weighing about 14,000 kilogrammes, the total weight of 25 stationary trucks on the Ojuelegba Bridge could be around 450,000 kilogrammes. This is besides the weight of other vehicles. The implication is that the four bridges on the Western Avenue area of the city – Ijora, Stadium, Ojuelegba and Abati Barracks – pack a massive 1.53 million kilogrammes on an average day.
The load on these bridges, not originally designed to host heavy static vehicles, and a lack of consistent and thorough maintenance could spell tragedy.
Structural engineer and immediate past President of NIStructE, Oreoluwa Fadayomi, said: “When these vehicles are stationary on the bridges for a long time, they have negative impacts. These include deterioration, bridge-fatigue, damage or even collapse. Moreover, there is no money anywhere now to build these kinds of solid structures again. Bridges are made so that vehicles keep moving.”
He warned: “There is also the risk of a fire. If any of the articulated vehicles catch fire, there would be a chain reaction, which can cause severe damage to the bridge. We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder because the bridges are weakening daily, as tankers, trucks and articulated vehicles park on them due to traffic congestion.”
He urged government to address the causes of vehicles parking on bridges and ensure proper and timely monitoring of the facilities. “Something should be done to stop it very fast because of the negative effect on the infrastructure and possible disaster in the event of a collapse,” Fadayomi added.
The challenge on the bridges is exacerbated by construction on the Apapa Road and the current fuel scarcity in the country. As a result, many vehicles are forced to stay permanently on the bridges for weeks, due to lack of loading bays in tank farms and oil companies.
Previous attempts by the Federal Government and Lagos State authorities to curtail the problem have proved abortive. The office of the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, has on several occasions given ultimatums to truck drivers or even deployed force, to no avail.
Most of the bridges were constructed during the 1970s oil boom. The nation would need $8 billion yearly to close up the huge gap in its public infrastructure and about $14 billion every year to fund infrastructure. Regrettably, current spending on infrastructure is an estimated $6 billion. Also, for decades, budgets for capital expenditure by federal and state governments have been on the decline while recurrent expenditure has been rising. The average government budget for capital expenditure has been about 25 per cent.
According to the past President, Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE), Dr. Samuel Ilugbekhai, the state of the bridges is one of gross structural abuse. He stressed that they were not designed to bear enormous weight from static trailers and tankers, and warned that their life spans could be shortened.
Urging government to put more effort into solving the problem, he noted the difference between buildings that house car parks and bridges. While multi-storeyed parks are designed for the specific purpose, bridges are intended to carry transitional loads within seconds. “They are not designed to retain loads for one hour, two hours, days or weeks,” Ilugbekhai said.
Also, President of the Nigerian Institute of Structural Engineers, Eddy Atumonyogo, said besides the destructive strain on the bridges, aesthetics is also compromised, with engine oil and other pollutants threatening surfaces.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Godwin Eke, however said government is aware of the dangerous state of the bridges. He said talks are ongoing with Ogun State to provide a loading bay where vehicles, especially those along Western Avenue, could park.
He disclosed that government has also engaged stakeholders like the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) and National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), with a view to solving the problem.
He added that if these efforts fail, the authorities might have to resort to towing the vehicles away.

The curious case of Iheanacho, Musa at Leicester

The curious case of Iheanacho, Musa at Leicester

Leicester City defeated Southampton 1-4 at St Mary’s in the English Premier League on Wednesday and two of Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup hopefuls Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho were missing on the team list altogether.
The aforementioned scenario has occurred too many times this season; in fact Musa on his part has failed to start a single league match this season while Iheanacho has only been deemed good enough for the less prestigious Carabao Cup.
This development is coming ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup which many are expecting Nigeria to put up a good showing after an impressive qualifying round, with both Musa and Iheanacho being vital members of the Super Eagles team, concerns have been raised.
The issue has generated debates among numerous football lovers and analysts across Nigeria with some arguing that the two Nigerians have to get clubs in January in order to remain competitive before the Russia Mundial in June 2018.
Former Eagles defender George Abbey was the first to respond to SHOTS inquisition, saying that the duo need to get out of Leicester as soon as possible in order to maintain sharpness.
Adding that training alone without playing actual matches doesn’t equate to being optimally sharp and ready for massive competitions like the World Cup.
“In my opinion, for the interest of our National team The Leicester guys (Musa, Iheanacho) need to go out on loan to get games & match sharpness. You can’t replicate match sharpness by just training & reserve games. The intensity is not the same. The question is will Leicester sanction this? The players will have to push.”
Former Nigeria U20 player Emmanuel Bello told SHOTS that it will benefit the players if they can either go out on loan or get permanent deals in January because continuing as it is will definitely not help their careers or the senior national team.
“The case of Musa and Iheanacho is quite unfortunate considering the fact that they are both quality players and deserve better situations. In my opinion the best thing is for both of them to start thinking of leaving in January so as to save their careers and Nigeria’s world cup dream.”
He added that Musa’s situation is especially troubling because he’s not involved even in the Cup matches at a time he needed to show new manager Claude Puel what he could do for the team.
“When Shakespeare (Craig) was sacked and Puel came in, we all thought Musa and Iheanacho will get good deals considering the Frenchman is more attacking minded compared to his predecessor but unfortunately their situation seem to have worsen under Puel which is sad.” He concluded.
On his part, football analyst and publisher of wolexis.com Wole Odeyemi believes lack of confidence might be a major problem affecting both players which might inhibit their ability to show the Leicester manager how good they are in training in order to give him selection headaches.
“Lack of games breeds lack of confidence and for any player who doesn’t get games at all, it shows in training because in most situations you don’t play your normal game, you either overdo things to impress the manager or you are on the verge of giving up, that is why most European clubs have psychologists to handle these issues.” Odeyemi noted.
The analyst added that the affected players can stay at Leicester, continue fighting till the end of the season because transfers in January are sometimes complicated.
“Transfers or loan deals in January are not always the best as history as shown with a lot of players, so I suggest they continue fighting for their chance at Leicester till the end of the season and from there think of their next moves.” He concluded.
Super Eagles number one fan (as he calls himself) Frank Samuel thinks Nigeria world cup dream stands to be negatively affected if the issue is not resolved as soon as possible.
“It pains me a lot, their situation that is, whenever Leicester City are playing, the first thing I do is to check the team list to see if they are there and I get disappointed. Let them get other clubs and leave there for their sake and Super Eagles’.” Samuel urged.

Conte backs Hazard to take central role in Chelsea charge

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has challenged Eden Hazard to take a central role in his side’s bid to close the gap on Manchester City when the champions face Swansea City on Wednesday.
Forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday, Chelsea are lagging 11 points behind runaway leaders City.
If Conte’s side are to have any change of catching the Premier League pace-setters, they must reel off the kind of lengthy winning streak that catapulted them to the title last season.
Key to Chelsea’s hopes of emulating that burst is the form of Belgium playmaker Hazard, who looks back to his best after an injury-hit start to the campaign.
Hazard was outstanding playing alongside Alvaro Morata at Anfield and Liverpool found it impossible to subdue him.
The 26-year-old often dropped into midfield to control possession and Conte feels his flexibility brings new dimension to the team.
“The start of this season was full of trouble with Eden because he had an injury with the national team and we started the season without him,” Conte said.
“Now I think Eden is in really good form and I think he likes to play as a striker.
“There is a good link with Alvaro and for me also it’s a great opportunity to play with two different systems.”
Although Chelsea are unbeaten in their last five league games, it has been a turbulent season for Blues boss Conte.
Frustrated by Chelsea’s failure to land his top transfer targets in the close-season, Conte has cut a tetchy figure as the pressure of defending the title and challenging for the Champions League starts to mount.
The Italian’s mood hasn’t been helped by City boss Pep Guardiola masterminding a major transfer overhaul and watching his spending pay rich dividends.
– Conte worried –
City look unstoppable at present after taking their winning run in the league to 11 matches with a victory at Huddersfield Town at the weekend.
“I think Manchester City in this season is a strong team. Also last season, Manchester City was a fantastic team. Then, after the transfer market, they bought their first targets and then they have improved a lot.
“They can do this also in January maybe, in the future. For this reason we must be worried,” Conte said.
While Conte frets about Chelsea’s prospects, the club’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois takes a more optimistic view.
“December is a very tough month. Maybe they drop some points,” he said.
“We have to be there to keep on winning and hopefully close down on them, then towards the end of the season maybe overtake them.”
Swansea could be easy pickings for Chelsea as Paul Clement’s side arrive at Stamford Bridge second bottom of the table after a five-match winless run.
A dour goalless draw with Bournemouth on Saturday did little to improve Clement’s job security after the former Chelsea assistant was reported to be on the verge of the sack last week.
Clement admits confidence has been low at Swansea of late, but he insists his players still believe they can put together a winning run and climb out of the relegation zone.
“It’s no secret the team has been down in confidence, but the running and battling was strong and we played some good football,” Clement said.
“I would have expected us to be in a healthier position than what we’re in.
“You know any time you put together back-to-back wins, or a win and a draw, you’re pushing out of those danger zones.
“Our form has not been particularly good, but that’s the belief we have.”

Five things we learned from La Liga

Javier Tebas PHOTO:AFP
On a weekend where La Liga was embarrassed by its failure to adopt goal line technology, there was at least the consolation that the title may not be over by the end of November.
Barcelona’s 1-1 draw at Valencia, overshadowed by Lionel Messi’s goal that wasn’t allowed to stand, maintains the Catalans’ four-point lead at the top.
However, victories for Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid brought the capital duo back to within eight points of the leaders.
Here, AFP Sports looks at five things we learned from La Liga.
Tebas’s goal line gaffe
La Liga’s president Javier Tebas has been keen to splash out on many minor details to improve the image of La Liga games for television viewers, including a range of new camera angles and even threatening to fine teams who didn’t fill stands visible on TV with supporters.
Yet, Tebas has bizarrely been steadfast in his opinion the introduction of goal line technology, used widely across Europe in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A, is too expensive.
His frugalness came at a heavy cost on Sunday night when, in front of a worldwide audience as the top two went head-to-head at Valencia, one of the league’s two marquee players was denied a clear goal as Messi’s shot trickled between Valencia goalkeeper Neto’s legs and over the line.
“La Liga has the best players in the world and the best league also deserves the best technology,” said Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets, whose sentiments were reflected with the image spread across all the front pages of Spain’s sports papers on Monday.
Barca back to basics
Despite a record breaking start to the season in terms of results, Ernesto Valverde’s Barca had been criticised for failing to convince with their performances.
However, despite dropping points for just the second time this season, Valverde’s men looked more like the Barca of old as they took the ball from Valencia in a dominant first-half display.
And despite the double blow of Messi’s non-goal and Rodrigo putting Valencia in front, the visitors responded like champions as Messi teed up Jordi Alba to equalise eight minutes from time.
Real make their penalty point
A weekend in which decisions very much favoured the white side of the Real-Barca divide should quieten complaints from Madrid of their supposed harsh treatment so far this season.
Fans at the Bernabeu held up red cards directed towards the Spanish federation’s referees’ chief Victoriano Sanchez Arminio before Saturday’s 3-2 win over Malaga protesting that Real hadn’t been awarded a penalty this season.
Low and behold the spot-kick arrived when Madrid desperately needed one 15 minutes from time as Cristiano Ronaldo ended his month-long La Liga goal drought on the rebound after his penalty had been saved by Roberto.
Malaga also had a goal controversially ruled out as Real again failed to convince against a side in the relegation zone.
Sevilla bounce back for Berizzo
Sevilla’s stunning fightback from 3-0 down to claim a vital 3-3 draw against Liverpool in the Champions League in midweek was quickly forgotten when the club announced on Wednesday coach Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The Argentine, though, is determined to continue working during his treatment and inspired another momentous comeback at Villarreal on Sunday to keep Sevilla in touch with the top four, just two points behind the Madrid sides.
Villarreal led 2-0 with just over half an hour remaining, but goals from Clement Leglet, Franco Vazquez and Ever Banega allowed Berizzo to end a terrible week with a some light relief.
Gameiro should be Griezmann’s wingman
Before Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann both struck twice in Saturday’s 5-0 rout at Levante, Atletico had scored just four times in their previous six La Liga games.

Wenger savours 21st anniversary as Arsenal sink Brighton

Arsenal’s Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez (R) vies with Brighton’s Dutch midfielder Davy Propper during the English Premier League football match between Arsenal and Brighton at the Emirates Stadium in London on October 1,

Arsene Wenger celebrated the 21st anniversary of his arrival at Arsenal in winning style as the Gunners cruised to a 2-0 victory over Brighton on Sunday.
There are many reasons for Arsenal fans to look back fondly on the day Wenger was hired but, after several years of underachievement, the Frenchman finds himself engaged in a fight to restore his tarnished reputation.
It is too early to predict whether Arsenal can end their 13-year wait to win a fourth Premier League title under Wenger, but there were some encouraging signs as Brighton were put to the sword at the Emirates Stadium.
Nacho Monreal opened the scoring in the first half before Alex Iwobi, converting Alexis Sanchez’s majestic assist, wrapped up the points after the interval.
Arsenal’s sixth win from their last seven matches in all competitions moved them to within six points of leaders Manchester City heading into the international break.
Fittingly, Wenger marked his milestone date with a notable record of his own.
Brighton are the 45th different Premier League club to be defeated by Arsenal since Wenger took over in 1996, breaking the record he shared with Manchester United legend Alex Ferguson.
Just 64 hours after winning at Belarus’s Bate Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday, Arsenal were back in action and Wenger freshened up his side by making nine changes.
Wenger this week claimed Arsenal are a more unified team since the transfer window closed just after their humiliating 4-0 defeat at Liverpool.
There was ample evidence to support that theory as his team tore into Brighton right from the start.
Alexandre Lacazette almost gave them the perfect start after just 65 seconds when his fierce drive flashed past Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan, only to cannon back off a post.
Albion striker Tomer Hemed was serving the first of a three-game suspension, so Izzy Brown started up front and the youngster went close with a header from Pascal Gross’s free-kick.
That effort aside, it was one way traffic as Wenger’s men left Brighton trailing in their wake time and again.
Irrepressible
Sanchez and Iwobi tested Ryan from long-range before Monreal gave Arsenal the lead in the 16th minute.
Granit Xhaka’s free-kick to the far post was headed back by Lacazette and after Shkodran Mustafi had his shot cleared off the line, Monreal chested down and fired home from 10 yards.
It was Monreal’s first league goal for Arsenal since March 2013 and the Spanish defender celebrated with a fist-pumping roar of delight.
Solly March nearly silenced Arsenal’s cheers moments later when he unleashed a powerful 20-yard shot that crashed back off a post.
The Gunners should have doubled their lead before half-time when Brighton defender Lewis Dunk slipped, putting Lacazette through on goal.
But Lacazette let Brighton off the hook with a tame shot straight at Ryan, while Aaron Ramsey saw his low strike repelled by the Australian keeper following an incisive Arsenal counter.
Those misses didn’t prove a source of regret as Sanchez produced a sublime contribution to set up Iwobi’s first goal since January in the 56th minute.
Exchanging passes in a blur of movement, Ramsey and Lacazette worked the ball smoothly into Sanchez inside the penalty area.
Faced with three Albion defenders, Sanchez knew a shot would be blocked, so he instinctively guided a back-heel towards the unmarked Iwobi, who had the simple task of firing home from eight yards.
Sanchez was in irrepressible mood and it took a combined of Dunk and Ryan to keep out his goal-bound shot, before Sead Kolasinac’s header was cleared off the line by March.

Spurs stroll as Kane bags brace

Tottenham Hotspur’s English striker Harry Kane (R) shoots to score their third goal, his second, during the English Premier League football match between Huddersfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur at the John Smith’s stadium in Huddersfield, northern England on September 30, 2017.
A Harry Kane masterclass ensured Tottenham cruised to a 4-0 victory against Huddersfield on Saturday.
Tottenham beat Cypriot champions APOEL Nicosia 3-0 courtesy of a brilliant Kane hat-trick on Tuesday and he was just as impressive in West Yorkshire, killing off Huddersfield inside the opening 20 minutes with two superbly taken goals.
Ben Davies put Tottenham ahead early on and substitute Moussa Sissoko added a late fourth as the London side blew away David Wagner’s men.
The early kick-off gave Tottenham a chance to keep in touch with the Premier League leaders and they gleefully took that opportunity against a Huddersfield team with plenty of heart but little real quality.
Huddersfield have proven to be surprisingly durable in defence this term, keeping four clean sheets in their opening six league matches, but that was long forgotten during a 90 minutes they will want to forget.
They were more than a match for Spurs early on as Tommy Smith had one fine long-range effort palmed away by Hugo Lloris and Rajiv van la Parra also saw Eric Dier block another opportunity.
However, Kane underlined again why he is one of Europe’s hottest properties and why almost every major side in the world would love to have him.
After nine minutes, Huddersfield’s Chris Lowe was caught napping at the back, the England striker raced through on goal and calmly slotted past Jonas Lossl to put Spurs ahead.
It was the kind of cool and clinical finish that Premier League fans have come to expect from the 24-year-old.
Wagner’s side remained lively but the visitors moved the ball very quickly and it was not long before Davies had doubled their lead as Huddersfield’s defence again failed to deal with Spurs’ forward forays.
After seven one-touch passes, the ball bobbled loose to Davies 16 yards out and he had all the time in the world to clip a shot past Lossl.
– Wonderful –
Spurs were fortunate not to concede a penalty shortly after their second goal as Davinson Sanchez clumsily barged Elias Kachunga inside the area.
But any hopes Huddersfield could get back into the contest were extinguished after 23 minutes when Kane scored a goal so good that even Huddersfield’s fans applauded.
Kane, with his back to goal and two defenders nearby, shrugged off their attention, swivelled and hit a wonderful curling effort past Lossl from 25 yards.
The strike was Kane’s 13th in September alone and meant Spurs had scored three goals in three consecutive away performances.
Huddersfield kept running but were fairly shell-shocked by the scoreline and Dele Alli could have made it four after 30 minutes but his close-range toe-poke hit the post from a tight angle.
Just before the break, Laurent Depoitre smashed an effort against the Spurs crossbar.
Huddersfield certainly did not give up but they lacked the class needed to get back into the contest.
Spurs took their foot off the accelerator after the restart and the entire game took a dip in quality as a result.
Dier and Christian Eriksen continued to harass Huddersfield but their impact was limited and Kane failed to see enough of the ball to cause further trouble.
Spurs took Eriksen off towards the end and his replacement Sissoko blasted one low effort straight as Lossl but then did better in stoppage-time, bundling home to seal the victory.

Mourinho to appear in court before Manchester United’s trip to Chelsea

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has been summoned to appear in a Madrid court on November 3, two days before he takes his team to his old club, Chelsea, in the Premier League.
Spanish authorities opened a case against Mourinho in June, for alleged tax evasion during his time as Real Madrid boss.
The 54-year-old allegedly did not declare revenue related to his image rights in 2011 and 2012 and owes the Spanish state nearly £2.9million.
Mourinho’s agent issued a statement at the time denying the allegation and pointed out he paid nearly £23m in taxes during his stint in Spain, at an average tax rate of more than 41%
It also stated that he had reached a settlement agreement with the Spanish taxman in 2013.
Angel Di Maria, Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi have all been convicted of tax evasion in recent years.

I will go back to Italy, I’m missing home – Antonio Conte

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has insisted that he will return to manage Italy in future, adding that he misses his homeland.
Conte said he has, “nostalgia” for his homeland and is aiming to return to Serie A in the future.
The Italian took over at Stamford Bridge at the beginning of last season and led the Blues to the Premier League title on first attempt.
It was Conte’s first job outside of Italy, having previously managed Arezzo, Bari, Atalanta, Siena, Juventus and the Italian national team.
The 48-year-old also spent his entire playing career in the country, featuring for Lecce and Juventus.
He told Radio Rai, “I have nostalgia for Italy. I did not have it in my head to stay abroad for so long.
“Once I have had some more nice experiences I will return to Italy, for sure. I don’t know when, but the goal is to do that.
“Foreseeing the future is always difficult. Ours is the most precarious work as you are in one place today and tomorrow you are in another.
“I have the will to finish a project, and then look for the right continuation of that.
“The English experience has greatly enriched me, and I’d like to carry on as manager in the future.”

Diego Costa reveals why he left Chelsea back to Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa says he was “very happy” at Chelsea, but is delighted to be coming “home” to play for Atletico Madrid.
Costa has arrived in Spain to undergo a medical, after it was announced on Thursday that his former club have re-signed him from Chelsea, for a fee believed to be in the region of £58m.
The 28-year-old joined Chelsea from Atletico in 2014 and scored 59 goals in 120 games, as they won two titles in three seasons.
But his relationship with manager Antonio Conte deteriorated this year and Costa ended up in exile in Brazil.
Regarding his departure from the Blues, the Spain international told Marca: “It’s not the way I wanted to leave, ever. I have a special affection for the people at Chelsea.
“I’m not a person who is going to smear the image. They know the person I am.
“I wanted to return (to Atletico). I’m not going to be ungrateful to Chelsea, where I was also very happy, playing in a team that was great.
“Atletico is my home and I’m here.”

Barcelona selling Neymar “a bad decision” – Rakitic

Barcelona midfielder, Ivan Rakitic, has said it was a “bad decision” for the club to sanction the record-breaking €222million sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.
The La Liga giants hardly had a choice, after Neymar made it clear he was ready to leave and PSG stumped up the cash to trigger his release clause.
Barca have already spent part of the money on the likes of Paulinho and Ousmane Dembele, but Rakitic concedes that the 25-year-old will be a big miss at Camp Nou.
“For me personally, it was really hard, not only because he’s one of the biggest players; also, for me, he’s a big person.
“He was really important for our dressing room, and for me he’s one of the best guys I know in football.
“So for me it was really a bad decision because I liked to have him in my team,” Rakitic told the BBC World Service.

We beat Liverpool because they substituted Coutinho – Leicester boss

Leicester City were under the cosh against Liverpool in Tuesday night’s League Cup clash but the turning point came for Foxes’ boss Craig Shakespeare when the Reds withdrew Philippe Coutinho at half-time which eased the way for a 2-0 win.
Second-half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani at the King Power Stadium guided the Foxes into the fourth round at Liverpool’s expense.
Coutinho played from the start, following on from his first Premier League outing of the campaign against Burnley at the weekend, after an opening to the season that saw the Brazilian pursue a move to Barcelona and spend time sidelined by a back injury.
Jurgen Klopp revealed after the match that his plan was always to withdraw Coutinho, but Shakespeare says emerging for the second half and not seeing the playmaker involved gave his side a welcome boost.
“We led a charmed life in the first half,” he said. “We know that our goal was under threat. I was just delighted to get in at half-time and then even more delighted to see they took Coutinho off.
“That was one of the main contributions to us for the second half. You worry about your own team’s performance and we asked them to be more aggressive in the second half. We needed better hold up play from the centre forwards in the second half.
“We wanted to play on the front foot a bit more. Shinji got his chance due to an injury to Leonardo Ulloa, but I thought that was key moment for us as well.
“You could see the response in terms of Shinji getting in and around people and it was a major factor in contributing to the win.”

Chelsea deny wrongdoing as FIFA confirms transfer investigation

FIFA has opened an investigation into Chelsea's transfer dealings amid suggestions that the Premier League leaders have breached regulations concerning the recruitment of youth players.
The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that FIFA had launched an inquiry into Chelsea's conduct when recruiting foreign players under the age of 18.
Contacted by ESPN FC, FIFA said: "We can confirm that an investigation is ongoing, but we cannot provide any details concerning the matters under investigation."
Chelsea were hit with a transfer ban in 2009 -- lifted after a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) -- relating to the 2007 signing of Gael Kakuta from Lens, while FIFA last year also investigated Bertrand Traore's move to Stamford Bridge, though no action was taken.
Responding to the news of the FIFA probe, a Chelsea spokesman said: "Chelsea FC complies with all FIFA Statutes and Regulations when recruiting players."
Barcelona and Real Madrid have both received transfer bans after being found guilty of violating FIFA rules on signing foreign minors, while Atletico Madrid are unable to register new players until January 2018 after their appeal against a similar charge was dismissed by CAS.

Chelsea's case is not reported to be as serious as any of the Spanish giants, though FIFA reserves the right to hand down sanctions ranging from a fine to a transfer ban if the Blues are found to have acted improperly.

Liverpool wanted £178m for Coutinho – Barca president

Liverpool would only sell Philippe Coutinho for 200m euros (£178m) this summer which priced Barcelona out of a deal, according to Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Speaking to Spanish TV, Barca’s president revealed Liverpool refused to negotiate on the Brazil international and believes this is due to the inflation caused by Neymar’s £200m move to Paris Saint-Germain.
“I will not say how much we offered, but [Liverpool] asked for 200m euros” said Bartomeu.
“We weren’t going to give €200m or €150m – we decided to step away from such an expensive market, our offer was less than €100m, with add-ons it could have reached €120m.
“Money has come into football from outside the game and made [the transfer market] more expensive, which explains what happened with Coutinho.
“We have to make these investments in La Masia and the club’s academy, we must respect the rules.
“This is why I am happy with the investigation into PSG, which is a request made by European clubs.
“Neymar? Officially, we learned he was leaving when he told us…at the end of July we saw things weren’t going well, but his father told us it was nothing.
“We believed his father’s word but there should have been more honesty, but we need to be self-criticism.”
Barcelona spent £97m from the sale of Neymar on Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, but he now faces four months out after sustaining a thigh injury during Saturday’s win at Getafe.

Neymar tells PSG chairman to sell Cavani over penalty bust-up against Lyon

Neymar has told Paris Saint-Germain to sell Edinson Cavani, after the two players clashed over taking a penalty.
The two South American forwards, had to be separated
in the dressing room following Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Lyon.
And now, according to Spanish outlet, Sport, the world’s most expensive player has told PSG chairman, Nasser Al-Khalifi, that the relationship is “broken” and playing together is “totally impossible”.
It is believed Neymar wants top-scorer Cavani offloaded in January.
The flashpoint came in the 79th minute of the Ligue 1 clash, when Kylian Mbappe won a penalty.
Neymar and Cavani argued over who would take a penalty, before the Uruguay striker won the battle, only to see his spot-kick saved.

five things learned in the premier league

Manchester City and Manchester United sit atop the table with exactly the same statistics but the former ahead by dint of C coming before U in the alphabet. Manchester United players celebrate a goal City demolished Watford 6-0 on Saturday and United tore apart Everton in the final 10 minutes of their encounter to prevail 4-0 on Sunday. Champions Chelsea are three points adrift of the duo after they were held 0-0 at home by Arsenal for whom it was the first time in six visits they even garnered a point. Pochettino can’t solve Wembley woes Having dispatched Borussia Dortmund with a swaggering display in the Champions League on Wednesday, it seemed Tottenham had finally vanished their Wembley curse. Mauricio Pochettino’s side had struggled badly at the national stadium, which is their home while White Hart Lane is rebuilt, but the victory over Dortmund was expected to trigger a resumption of the home form that saw them win 17 of 19 league games last term. Swansea had other ideas however. Defending resolutely, they frustrated Spurs in Saturday’s 0-0 draw, with Harry Kane hitting the woodwork for the hosts, who also had three penalty appeals turned down. Even Pochettino, who has tried to play down the Wembley jinx, admitted he was at a loss to explain how his side failed to turn 26 shots into three points. Klopp has little defence Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s botched attempt to prise Virgil van Dijk away from Southampton looks even more of a blooper with every game. Burnley’s early season away form is showing a marked improvement from last season but nevertheless it was another Liverpool defensive error that gifted the visitors’ Scott Arfield the goal. Klopp for all his urbanity and attractive attacking football could well fall if he doesn’t fix the defensive malaise as it is proving costly. “A little block here, we miss Arfield, or forget him, and he can score,” said Klopp. “It was a disciplined performance but just that one goal. This is where we have to improve.” Aguero inspired by Jesus Sergio Aguero has reacted in the manner Pep Guardiola must have only dreamed of when he signed young Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus who arrived last January. Some thought the 29-year-old Argentinian might be sold on or leave of his own volition but he has stayed and with his sixth Premier League hat-trick in the 6-0 demolition of Watford is within three goals of becoming City’s all-time leading scorer — Eric Crook’s mark of 177 goals which has stood since 1939. Jesus also got on the scoresheet as City made it 15 goals scored and none conceded in their last three matches but it is Aguero who is giving the lead. “He’s very special, just a goal machine,” purred City team-mate Ilkay Gundogan. Arsenal show fight at last After years of misery at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal finally showed some much-needed fighting spirit to earn a gritty 0-0 draw against 10-man Chelsea on Sunday. Arsene Wenger’s side had endured a series of humiliating losses in west London, beaten on their last five visits, but for once they were up to the task. Matching the Premier League champions tackle for tackle, the Gunners frustrated Chelsea so completely that Blues defender David Luiz lost his composure in the 87th minute. Launching into a crude two-footed lunge on Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac, the Brazilian earned a red card from referee Michael Oliver. The dismissal came too late to swing the balance of power in Arsenal’s favour, but at least the north Londoners departed with their confidence enhanced by a first clean-sheet at the Bridge since 2005. For Chelsea, a third red card in their last three matches with Arsenal added to the angst of a spluttering display. Resilient United Everton had taken the upper hand in the second-half of their game with Manchester United but paid for not taking their chances. United showed they can soak up pressure and make their opponents pay as they scored three times in the final 10 minutes of the match with former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku creating one and scoring another — all this without the injured Paul Pogba. The signs are that United have the extra firepower — Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still to return — this season to sustain a serious challenge for the title.

Premier league: Aguero scores hat-trick in Manchester City’s 6 – 0 win over Watford

Manchester City forward, Sergio Aguero, hit a hat-trick as Pep Guardiola’s side brushed Watford aside with six goals to nil to return to the top of Premier League table.
It was a demolition from City, who were three goals to the good before half-time as Marco Silva’s side were on course to suffer a damaging home defeat.
Aguero scored twice before Gabriel Jesus added a third. The pair combined very well again after both partnered to score in the thrashing of Liverpool last weekend.
It was more of the same partnership in the second half as Nicolas Otamendi scored before Aguero dribbled past four Watford defenders to complete his hat-trick.
Raheem Sterling netted the sixth goal of the game from the penalty spot.
It brings the club’s goal tally to 11 in six days as City marched back to the top of the Premier League in style.

La Liga: Barcelona maintain perfect start after comeback win at Getafe

Ousmane Dembele hobbled off in the first half, as Barcelona came from a goal down to defeat Getafe 2-1 on Saturday.
The France winger who an initial €105million, was making his first La Liga start for the Catalans, picked up a hamstring injury and was replaced by Gerard Deulofeu.
Getafe took the lead through Gaku Shibasaki, but an average Barca drew level thanks to Denis Suarez.
Paulinho who arrived at the Camp Nou this summer, came off the bench to net the winner, to ensure their perfect start to the season continues.
Barcelona remain top of the league with 12 points after four games.

Trump angers Britain in midst of London attack

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa
President Donald Trump sparked fury in London and yet another pointed rebuke from Prime Minster Theresa May Friday after he claimed “loser terrorists” behind a botched London train attack were known to British police.
Trump took to Twitter to condemn an attack on a packed London Underground train that injured 22 people, but also appeared to suggest the UK authorities had dropped the ball.
“Another attack in London by a loser terrorist,” the US president tweeted. “These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive!” Trump said, appearing to reveal undisclosed intelligence from the headquarters of London’s Metropolitan police force.
That electronic broadside brought a terse public response from May, who warned the US president and others not to speculate.
“I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation,” May told journalists in London.
Trump’s latest comments were similarly described as “unhelpful” by London’s Metropolitan Police.
Nick Timothy, May’s former chief of staff, also branded the US leader’s tweet “unhelpful.”
“True or not — and I’m sure he doesn’t know — this is so unhelpful from leader of our ally and intelligence partner,” Timothy wrote on Twitter.
Trump’s keenness to underline a series of UK terror attacks, virtually in real time, has led to repeated outcry across the Atlantic that has helped indefinitely delay his much-vaunted state visit to Britain.
In May, British officials were furious after their US counterparts leaked shared material about an investigation into a bomb attack at a concert by pop star Ariana Grande in Manchester which left 22 dead.
The bomber’s identity and details of the probe leaked to US media before British officials felt ready to disclose them.
Trump renews call for travel ban
After an attack in London last June, Trump lashed London’s Muslim mayor Sadiq Khan for telling the public there was “no reason to be alarmed” over armed police on the streets.
On that occasion, Prime Minister May was forced to upbraid Trump, saying “I think Donald Trump is wrong in what he said about Sadiq Khan in the aftermath of the London Bridge attack.”
In March, the White House left UK spooks apoplectic when it cited unproven media reports that President Barack Obama had asked Britain’s signals intelligence agency, GCHQ, to monitor then-candidate Trump in order to “make sure there were no American fingerprints.”
The normally tight-lipped agency called the allegations “nonsense,” adding that “they are utterly ridiculous and should be ignored.”
Trump on Friday also used the London train attack to renew calls for his controversial ban on travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries — a rallying cry of his right-wing base who have recently been angered by his support for an amnesty for some migrants.
“The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific — but stupidly, that would not be politically correct,” the president said in a series of tweets.
“Loser terrorists must be dealt with in a much tougher manner. The internet is their main recruitment tool which we must cut off & use better!” he added, without elaborating.
But that domestic political message risked upending the decades old trans-Atlantic relationship.
Speaking in London on Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson hailed a relationship that is “as special today as it has ever been.”
That premise looks set to be tested when Trump, as he also announced Friday, calls May to discuss the attack in the coming days.
