Reports from London are claiming that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal to stay at the club until 2021.
The BBC reported on Wednesday that the German, 29, becomes the highest-paid player in the club’s history, earning about £350,000 a week before tax.
Ozil had been linked with an Arsenal exit at the end of the season when his previous contract was due to expire, but he has now had a turnaround and decided to stay at the Emirates until he is 32.
He joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then club record £42.4m and has been one of the Premier League club’s top performers since.
Ozil has made 21 appearances this season, scoring four goals and recording six assists.
Ozil’s deal comes a day after Arsenal’s embarrassing 3-1 Premier League defeat to Swansea. But the deal, along with the £56m record signing pf striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund, will go some way in softening the blow of the defeat.
